G-Box Midnight MX2 Giveaway

I reviewed Matricom G-Box Midnight MX2 Android set-top box about a month ago, and I was pretty happy with the device with regards to performance, stability, and XBMC support. During my initial review, Wi-Fi was really excellent, the best, by far, I had seen in the dozen of devices I had tested, although an upgrade to my router firmware somehow changed that. This is also one the rare device that will support OTA firmware update. There were still some problems in the firmware I tested: some videos could not play, composite output did not work…, but overall I find it’s a pretty good device. The company also seems committed to fix issues, as they even have a public bug tracking system for the MX2. If you plan to use Android app, and not only XBMC, the IR remote provided may not be the ideal input device, and you’ll probably need to either connect a wireless keyboard or mouse, run DroidMote in the device and your smartphone, or get a “fly mouse“.

Matricom recontacted me to ask if I would be interested in doing a giveaway for my readers. I asked for 3 set-top boxes, and they agreed. The contest is open to all, but shipping will only be free to the US, and winners who can not provide a US mailing address will be asked cover for shipping expenses $29 US payable via Paypal.

There are three ways to enter the contest with one G-Box midnight MX2 awarded for each:

  • Comment on this post below [Update: 72 comments, random.org returned 2, the winner is Petrut Popa]
  • Retweet if you want to win with #mx2giveaway tag. [Update: The winner is renw0rp]
  • Comment in that Facebook post. [Update: Kerry won the Facebook contest]

Other rules are as follows:

  • You can enter all 3 contests, or only one or two.
  • Only one entry per contest. I will filter out entries with the same IP and/or email address. I’ll probably also discard twitter and facebook entries made with newly created account.
  • I’ll run the twitter contest for 1 day until Tuesday 10am, Facebook for 2 days until Wednesday 10am, and  comments for 3 days until Thursday 10am. Times are provided for Bangkok timezone.
  • Winners will be selected with random.org
  • I’ll contact the winners by email, twitter or facebook, and send an email to Matricom in order to arrange shipment by Fedex. Winners have to answer within 24 hours, or I’ll pick another one.

In case you’ve already bought a G-Box Midnight MX2 via Amazon, and would like to get one for your friends or family, Matricom also launched a program called “Review the MX2, and get a free MX2”. You’ll have to upload a video review to YouTube (3 minutes or more) in order to get another device. Check details here.

Good luck!

  1. Looks great! Wouldn’t mind trying this out as I don’t have a dedicated XBMC device yet.

  2. I would love to win one of these wonderful boxes… Gbox + XBMC would be a great combo !!

  3. Well that looks promising indeed…

please do count me in also…

    Thank you in advance…

  4. Looks nice, does anyone know if it possible to get fullhd resolution/quality for Netflix android app? Last time tried with UG802 there was no possibility to change resolution/quality for video.

  5. I don’t have twitter or facebook, so it seems I’m excluded from Matricom’s nefarious attempt at guerilla marketing :p

  6. I found it funny to read at “2nd box” giveaway a section titled “How do I know I’ll really get a FREE MX2?” – as if they asked in return not to post a review of device on youtube, but doing something bad ;-).

Otherwise, Bug Genie software they use for their bugtracker is pretty slick. It’s open-source and I haven’t heard about it, so I already got something out if it.

  7. Count me in! I bet all my chips on this post, because FB and TW aren’t for me.

  8. Send one over to me and I’ll gladly pay for the shipping 😉

    Good luck to everyone.

  9. This one for sure fits with my Sony projector (which currently has no signal source..). I’ll be happy to win this one!

Sicne im probably the only one here that already owns one Ill try to answer it for you. The Netflix that comes with it is a little outdated. I installed the one from the Play Store and it works 10 times better. The resolution is great. You can change the resolution right from the Netflix website also. Hope that helps.

  14. i have couple android box but non seem to work correctly, included those that use mxplayer as an external player, some movie link, host cannot not be play. Want to see if G-box can do better.

  15. I am using a Tronsmart MX908 and it does a pretty good job with XBMC. I’d love to compare this device and then post a comparison review.

  16. I’m interested! This could be the motivation I need to finally replace my original xbox with a modern media player.

  18. I would like to win one Cause I am looking for media center device for my new home. Thanks anyway 🙂

  19. Can’t wait to test one of those shiny set-top boxes! I hope to get lucky this time!

  20. Thank you for your previous review – I think, I will buy this device. I have UG802 dongle but this device looks much more interesting. But …. if there is a chance for getting one free, I will wait with buying 😉 Maybe I will be the lucky boy 😀 Regards, Tomas

  21. The true test would be to have a guy in his late 50’s, who still remembers black and white tv, having to turn the antenna to improve reception and worse of all, actually get up off the couch to change channels, evaluate it and determine if it’s as easy as plug-n-play. I happen to know such a fellow. 🙂
