Geniatech DB982 – An 8K TV motherboard with Amlogic T982 CPU, ATSC 3.0 TV tuner

Geniatech DB982 is a development board/motherboard powered by an Amlogic T982 quad-core Cortex-A55 processor designed for 8K televisions and equipped with an ATSC 3.0 TV tuner.

The board ships with up to 4 GB RAM and up to 128 GB eMMC flash, and also includes three 4K HDMI inputs, LVDS and ultra-high-definition VX1 LCD screen interfaces, as well as Fast Ethernet and WiFI 5 connectivity.

Geniatech says the board supports Android P/R which translates into Android 10 or 11. The motherboard only supports 8K from local storage or the ATSC 3.0 tuner, and not from an external device such as an 8K TV box since the HDMI input ports are limited to 4Kp60.

Geniatech does not sell samples of the DB982 board online at this time. Volume pricing and additional information may be requested/found on the product page, and the Amlogic website may have extra details about the processor.

No AV1 reeeee

I just noticed 8K TVs are as low as $1k to $1400 in the US. I wonder what they will be on Black Friday.

Maybe for signage applications? I certainly wouldn’t want that in my personal TV. Heck, my personal TV is as dumb as I could find. No apps, no network, just video inputs. I dread the next TV purchase.

Dumb TVs are almost completely gone from the market. But if you don’t want it to connect to a network, don’t log in to a network and just use the HDMI port.

Hope it ships with working firmware. It’s getting more and more common for devices to ship before the software is done so they demand you put them on the network so they can download their actual final firmware. Guess they learned it from the video game industry where day 1 patches as large or larger than the original install media have become common.

Yeah, on the hopium list:

  1. Use the firmware it ships with and never update. If there are broken smart features, ignore them, because you’re just using the HDMI ports anyway, maybe a digital antenna.
  2. The initial setup process allows you to skip connecting to a Wi-Fi network and the Internet.
  3. The TV doesn’t come with a cellular module that automatically connects to nearby networks as soon as the TV is powered on, without your consent.

I think we can get away with all 3 for now, but maybe not forever.

Fast Ethernet can be accepted on 4K TV’s, since most 4K content has bitrate of 20~50 Mbps, but on 8K TV?? Come on! Gigabit Ethernet controllers are $1, ffs.
