Amlogic S912(-H) TV Box Boards Are Starting to Show Up

Amlogic S912 is one of the most expected processor this year for TV box users, and while there’s still a few months development needed before devices based on the new platform go on sale, some boards have started to surface on the Internet.

The first board named S912_MBX_REF_Q02_V01 is shown above, and has the following specifications:

  • SoC – Amlogic S912 or S912-H octo core ARM Cortex A53 processor @ 2.0GHz  with ARM Mali-820MP3 @ 750MHz+
  • System Memory – 2GB  (Optional 1GB)
  • Storage – 16GB eMMC flash (Optional 8GB) + micro SD slot
  • Video Output – HDMI 2.0 and AV ports
  • Audio Output – HDMI, AV, and optical S/PDIF
  • Connectivity – Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac + Bluetooth 4.0
  • Misc – IR receiver, recovery push button (behind AV jack)

As a reminder the -H suffix means Dolby and DTS licenses are paid for, so audio down-mixing will work in all apps.

The second board is called S92-V01, will likely found its way into MXQ S92 or similarly named products, and specifications are quite similar except the AV is gone, and it features one extra USB port. Both boards also appear to provide easy access to the serial port.

@Benjamin
At least a last gen GPU : mali 830mp3 vs 450mp3 => we might have double or triple GPU performance 😀

Hope that Amlogic step-up and improve their SDK implementation for Android’s MediaCodec API.

While Amlogic does have among the best codecs for Linux and their own custom implementation for Android, they have among the worst codecs for Android’s MediaCodec API.

Point in fact, the next version of Kodi / XBMC will only support Android’s native MediaCodec API on Android.

@Paulin ARBOUX

I see. So nothing really noteworthy for video playback.

USB vers. 3 or 2? Could be a good Linux box if Linux is supported afterwards by the community 🙂

Any idea if the A53s in the S912 implement the AES, SHA and CRC armv8 extensions? I’m asking since the cores in the S902 don’t.

Speaking of video strong it is a shame they don’t sell these to the public with Linux support,

If this is another single channel, 32-bit DDR3 design, it is not a big improvement over existing hardware.

Android nighties of Kodi are up for download but like Harley mentioned unless Amlogic steps up with better support for the MediaCodec API or Codesnake from WeTek hacks a way around it’s gonna be ugly for Amlogic devices.

Do you know where we can buy those videostrong boards ?
I did try to find a source for their “K1 DVB” board but couldn’t find one.

Unless Kodi gets an Android code maintainer then a whole bunch of Kodi forks will be the future of Kodi on Android going forward regardless of the Hardware used.
Even large, resource rich, companies like nVIDIA cannot get it right with deinterlacing now broken in Android when using Mediacodec on the Shield.
