MINIX Unveils NEO T5 & NEO U22-XJ Amlogic S905X2 / S922XJ Android TV Media Hubs

We’ve already seen MINIX showcased a fanless Gemini Lake mini PC at IFA 2019, but the company also had two upcoming Amlogic TV boxes on display at the event. MINIX NEO T5 features Amlogic S905X2 quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, while MINIX NEO U22-XJ TV box is powered by an Amlogic S922XJ hexa-core Cortex-A73/A53 processor. The former runs Android TV 9.0 with Google certification, while the latter comes pre-loaded with Android 9.0 OS.

I had never heard about S922XJ, and apparently, Amlogic has yet to formally announce it, so I wonder whether it could be Amlogic S922X-B tipped by Khadas a while ago with higher CPU & GPU clock speeds. The processor will also come with Dolby Vision and Dolby Audio licenses, and Amlogic has a history of giving different processor names depending on the audio licenses.

Great news, Minix is usually better quality than other 3rd-tier OEMs.
If only they could launch w/ Android 10 so we could get ¨Project Mainstream” on it (an update to 10 won’t retrofit that, apparently).

“Project Mainline” maybe ?

Android 10 isn’t finalized yet on Android TV.

Also I’m pretty sure this T5 isn’t their design but one from SDMC, check the DV8235 or DV8535, exact same box.

So much quality to cost 170e a simple ARM box? sorry but it’s nonsense. I bought a complete computer with Intel J4105, 4GB DDR4 + 250GB SSD for 180e all together a few weeks ago, so this Minix is a nono.

Project Treble/Project Mainline is already working since some time. I have P working on some amlogic and allwinner boxes running Oreo vendor. I haven’t tried Q yet.

Also the real Project Mainline is not available anywhere yet (perhaps on Pixels?), and I don’t expect any device (be it smartphone or TV Box) with it in Q

Sam over at OSMC talked about how J variant chip has Dolby Vision enabled. So maybe we will actually see a DV capable Android media player?

Also as Amlogic is one of the certified SoC suppliers for Android TV hybrid STB designs aimed at operators, also claimed to give 30% total cost of ownership savings over a average Linux device. As Google said ” Android TV now offers access to more than 1,000 streaming content providers and houses more than 5,000 apps through the Google Play store. The platform is also working to build in more monetization opportunities for partners including targeted advertising and dynamic ad insertion, made possible through a team up with Google Ad Manager. ”

So more adverts ?
