$349 AMD Kria KR260 Robotics Starter Kit takes on NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier devkit

AMD Xilinx Kria KR260 Robotics Starter Kit features the Kria K26 Zynq UltraScale+ XCK26 FPGA MPSoC system-on-module (SoM) introduced last year together with the Kria KV260 Vision AI Starter Kit.

Designed as a development platform for robotics and industrial applications, the KR260 is said to deliver nearly 5x productivity gain, up to 8x better performance per watt and 3.5x lower latency compared to Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier or Jetson Nano kits. We’ll have a better look at the details below.

The Kria KR260 supports Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop (22.04) from Canonical and ROS 2 Humble Hawksbill through a collaboration with Open Robotics to validate and ensure compliance of the ROS 2 implementation for the robotics community. The kit also supports Vitis Unified SW Platform for FPGA program and AMD provides a Kria Robotics Stack At least, you won’t be stuck to Ubuntu 18.04 as on NVIDIA Jetson devkits.

Talking about Jetson platforms, let’s go back to AMD claims when comparing Kria KR260 against Jetson Xavier AGX/Nano using the Isaac ROS SDK, and samples on Github:

  • 5x productivity gain against both Xavier AGX/Nano
    • Development time accounts for toolchain setup with ROS 2, cross-compilation of host code, creation and build of accelerator implementing two functions: doublevadd_publisher and accelerated_doublevadd_publisher.
  • Up to 8x better performance per watt and 3.5x lower latency compared to Jetson Xavier AGX
    • Rectify and Resize functions from the ROS Perception Stack accelerated on Kria and Nvidia platforms; power and performance are measured.

A getting started guide on AMD Xilinx website shows instructions with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and PetaLinux 2021.1, and it looks like accelerated apps are working on PetaLinux, but more work is needed on Ubuntu. Ubuntu 22.04 does also show up, but it’s currently marked at Beta on the download page, which as a side note is hosted on Ubuntu.com, and Canonical also announced it would be a Ubuntu certified board. Support is provided on the forums.

AMD Kria KR260 Robotics Starter Kit sells for $349 directly on the product page, where you’ll find additional information, as well as through distributors such as Digikey and Excelpoint. The kit includes the board, a getting started guide, some stickers, a 12V/3A power adapter, some Ethernet cables, and you can optionally purchase a Sony IMX547 camera module. Additional information may also be found in the press release, and the company is also showcasing the Kria K26 SoM and kits at the 2022 Embedded Vision Summit, May 16-19 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

up to 8x better performance per watt and 3.5x lower latency compared to Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier or Jetson Nano kits

Are those two the same??? Isn’t it like comparing something to a 35 ton lorry and McLaren at the same time?

It’s not that I did not understand. It is the sentence, that make no sense in current form. Below, you state “Up to 8x better performance per watt and 3.5x lower latency compared to Jetson Xavier AGX” and somehow drop Nano out of initial claim. As for “5x productivity gain against both Xavier AGX/Nano” – what’s “productivity” in that case? Is it relative or absolute measure? If it is absolute, how can it be the same for AGX and Nano? If relative, how can it be expressed through physical parameters like time, power or whatever? If those are direct quotes… Read more »
