Pumpkin i500 SBC uses MediaTek i500 AIoT SoC for computer vision and AI Edge computing

MediaTek Rich IoT SDK v20.0 was released at the beginning of the year together with the announcement of Pumpkin i500 SBC with very few details except it would be powered by MediaTek i500 octa-core Cortex-A73/A55 processor and designed to support computer vision and AI Edge Computing.

Pumpkin i500 hardware evaluation kit was initially scheduled to launch in February 2020, but it took much longer, and Seeed Studio has only just listed the board for $299.00.

computer vision edge ai computing boardThe company provides Yocto Linux and Android 10 support for the board using Linux 5.4 kernel, as well as tools to support TensorFlow Lite and
Object detection (MobileNet + SSD) to enable the development of AI vision products such as control panels, smart hubs, points-of-sales, smart appliances, robots, etc.. . Software support is provided through the Pumpkin Software SDK that happens to be supported by BayLibre.

The Pumpkin i500 is also certified for Azure IoT Edge and qualified for AWS IoT Greengrass to enable the deployment of workloads to the Edge through standard containers.

What’s unclear is what cameras and displays are compatible with the board. Based on the $299 price (which I confirmed with Seeed Studio), you’d expect those to be included in the kit. Provided you represent a company with a commercial project in mind, the best may be to request a free demo from OLogic, the manufacturer of the board. They offer those on the product page which currently has limited information.

Crazy pricing.

I dont see that much value in this to justify even half of the 299 asking price.

Interesting SoC. But the board doesn’t seem impressive. Only 2GB memory.
That’s not much for such a powerful board. No GbE. The design also looks weird with the square corners and rather sparsely populated. And indeed that price…
I don’t know who this is for, but for sure not for me.
