MistySoM Renesas RZ/G2L or RZ/V2L SoM and devkit goes for $112 and up

MistySOM devkit Renesas RZ/G2L or RZ/V2L

We’ve previously written about several system-on-modules and SBCs based on Renesas RZ/G2L or RZ/V2L Cortex-A55/M33 processors such as Geniatech “AHAURA” RS-G2L100 and “AKITIO” RS-V2L100 single board computers, Forlinx FET-G2LD-C system-on-module, and SolidRun RZ/G2LC SOM and devkit.

But most of those are hard to buy, and you need to contact the company, discuss your project, etc… before purchase, except for the SolidRun Renesas RZ/G2LC Evaluation Kit going for $249. Another option is the MistyWest MistySOM module offered for $112 and up on GroupGets with either Renesas RZ/G2L or RZ/V2L processor, as well as an optional carrier board.

The MistySOM-G2L targets industrial and commercial computing applications such as Barcode scanner systems, self-checkouts, HMI, network gateways, general-purpose SBCs, wearables cameras, and so on. The MistySOM-V2L is quite similar, but the integrated DRP-AI accelerator compatible with AI frameworks such as ONNX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow enables applications leveraging machine learning acceleration such as sports cameras with movement tracking, people counting, traffic monitoring, smart agriculture, construction safety, and more.

MistyCarrier board and software support

MistyCarrier board

MistyWest also provides the MistyCarrier for the module with the following interfaces:

  • Storage – MicroSD card slot
  • Display
    • 30-pin MIPI-DSI FPC Connector
    • 8-pin touch screen connector (shares RIIC1 I 2 C interface)
  • Camera
    • 24-pin MIPI-CSI FPC Connector compatible with Google Coral OV5645 camera
    • Raspberry Pi camera module v2 (OV5647) and e-Con systems camera modules based on IMX462 / AR0234 can also be supported through an adapter board.
  • Audio – 3.5mm microphone jack, 3.5mm headphone out jack
  • Networking
    • 2x Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 ports
    • Wireless WiFi 5 (802.11a/b/g/n/ac 2.4GHz, 5GHz) and Bluetooth v5.0
  • USB – 1x USB 2.0 Type-A host port, 1x Micro USB 2.0 device port
  • Serial – 2x 3-pin CAN-FD connectors
  • Expansion – 40-pin header with 13x 3.3V GPIOs, 8x 12-bit ADC, 1x NMI (nonmaskable interrupt), 2x I2C, 1x SPI, 3x UART (1x shared with BLE module)
  • Power Supply – Power 5V over USB-C (compatible with RaspberryPi 4 power adapters)
  • Dimensions – 160 x 120 x 19.7 mm
  • Temperature Range – -40 to 85°C

The modules and carrier boards are supported through the Renesas RZ/G Linux Platform based on the Civil Infrastructure Project (CIP) Super Long-Term Support (SLTS) Linux kernel. What I can’t find right now is software documentation like getting started guides and the like. Maybe they just rely on Renesas’ documentation.

The MistySOM-G2L goes for $112, the MistySOM-V2L for $117, and most people will want to add the $165 carrier board as well, so a full evaluation/development kit costs around $280.
